MBBS, also known as Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery has been one of the prestigious courses among medical courses across the globe since generations. Despite its reputation,MBBS is the most challenging course in higher education. MBBS aims to give an academic understanding of concepts such as human anatomy, chemistry, medicine, drugs formulation and effect, pharmaceutical experience and method of surgery through practical and theoretical experiences. In India, MBBS is the most sight-after course and lakhs of students compete for MBBS admissions every year. However, the MBBS seats in India are limited and the students face a tough competition to get admission.

NOTE- AIIMS and JIPMER MBBS haven been scrapped for MBBS admissions in India. NEET is the only entrance exam for admission in MBBS/ BDS/ BVSc/ UG AYUSH courses. NEET 2020 will take place on 26th July 2020

MBBS Course Duration

Before jumping into the MBBS admission process in India, it is advisable to know all about the MBBS course duration.

The duration of MBBS course is 5 ½ years including a rotating internship of one year. The internship is mandatory, and one can complete the course only by completing an internship. The duration of MBBS academic course is 4 ½ years that comprises of nine semesters. MCI (Medical Council of India) is the only accreditation body in India for MBBS course. MCI is responsible for structuring/ revamping the MBBS course in India.

MBBS Admission Process 2020

MBBS admissions in India for the academic session 2020 will begin in May 2020. In India, MBBS admission process is purely based on entrance tests, and direct admission to MBBS course is not possible without entrance exam score. Therefore, MBBS aspirants must clear MBBS entrance exam to secure admission.

MBBS Entrance Exams in India

NEET is the only entrance exam for admission in MBBS/ BDS/ BVSc/ UG AYUSH courses.

NEET-UG: NEET-UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is a popular national-level MBBS entrance exam. All the government & private medical colleges, universities and deemed universities consider NEET-UG score for MBBS admissions. Usually, NEET-UG is conducted in the month of May every year. However, institutes such as AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) and JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research) do not consider NEET-UG for MBBS admissions. These institutes conduct their own entrance exams for MBBS admissions.

Which is the Best MBBS Entrance Exam in India?

Among the three national-level MBBS entrance exams such as NEET-UG, AIIMS MBBS, and JIPMER MBBS, it is difficult to judge the best entrance exam. Let us look at the below examples to choose the best MBBS entrance exam.

Example 1: If you apply for the NEET-UG entrance exam, it means that you are competing for MBBS admission in government or private medical colleges/ universities/ deemed universities/ private universities. With a valid NEET-UG score, you can get admission in any of the above medical colleges.

Through NEET-UG, you can compete for All India Quota (AIQ) or State Quota seats. Therefore, the chances of securing MBBS admission are high through NEET-UG. However, the admissions are purely based on the order of merit. One must clear the NEET-UG cutoff to be eligible for the admission process.

Example 2: If you apply for NEET MBBS entrance exam, it means that you are not only competing for MBBS admission in any of the nine AIIMS institutes across the country but for all the medical colleges across the country. With a valid NEET score, you can get admission in AIIMS institutes in India. However, other medical colleges in India and JIPMER also consider NEET score for MBBS admissions. The students must clear the NEET MBBS cutoff and feature in the merit list to be eligible for admission process. Here, the admission chances are broad, as there are multiple options.

Example 3: If you apply for NEET entrance exam, it means that you are not only competing for MBBS admission in JIPMER Puducherry or JIPMER Karaikal campuses. JIPMER does not conduct separate entrance exam for MBBS admission. Candidates who clear the NEET MBBS cutoff and feature in the merit list will be eligible for admission process. Here, the admission chances are board as multiple options are available for medical aspirants.

Example 4: While participating in NEET counselling through AIQ, it is always better to aim for AIIMS as well as top government and private medical colleges. While exercising the web options, you can choose AIIMS, JIPMER or any other government or private medical college across the country. You can get admission on the basis of your NEET AIQ rank.

How to Apply for MBBS Course?

After clearing NEET-UG respective admission authority will conduct a centralised admission process for MBBS admissions. Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) will conduct admission process for MBBS course through NEET-UG. Students who cleared the entrance exam and featured in the merit list are eligible to take part in the counselling process. Students need to submit a separate application form for MBBS course to individual institutes.

MBBS Eligibility Criteria

The MBBS eligibility criteria for MBBS entrance exams and MBBS admission is as follows –

  • The basic requirement for MBBS admission and entrance exam in India is Class 12 with a minimum of 50% marks. The students must have studied Biology, Physics, and Chemistry as main subjects in Class 12.
  • The lower age limit for MBBS admission and entrance exam in India is 17 years while the upper age limit is 25 years.

MBBS Admission Process through NEET

Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) is the authority for conducting MBBS admissions through NEET-UG. However, MCC conducts MBBS admission process through NEET for 15% AIQ (All India Quota) seats. Students competing for AIQ MBBS admissions are eligible to get admission in any medical college across the country. For 85% of MBBS seats, state governments conduct MBBS admission process.

Usually, NEET-UG results are released in the month of June, and the counselling for MBBS course under AIQ and state quota begins in the second week of June every year. Only those candidates who featured in the merit list released by MCC are eligible to take part in the admission process. Registration: NEET-UG 2020 counselling begins with the registration process, and the candidates aspiring for 15% AIQ MBBS seats must visit the official website of MCC to complete the registration process. Click on the application form link to register for MBBS admission process.

Counselling Fee Payment: After the registration process, the candidates must pay the prescribed counselling fee online by using a credit card/ debit card/ net banking. The NEET-UG counselling fee details are elaborated below.

Exercising and Locking of Choices: At this stage of the admission process, the candidates must submit preferences. The students must note that MBBS admissions through NEET will be based on NEET-UG merit and preferences submitted by candidates during the counselling process. There is no limit on the choices to be selected by the candidates. After selecting choices, candidates can change the order of choices, add new choices, or delete existing choices. Finally, lock the choices so that you will be eligible for seat allotment.

Seat Allotment: Seat allotment result will be declared based on NEET-UG merit and choices locked by the candidates. Candidates can download the seat allotment letter through the official website.

Reporting: After downloading the seat allotment letter, candidates must report to the respective college with all the mandatory documents. The admission will be confirmed only after reporting and submission of mandatory documents.

Documents to Submit at the Time of Reporting: The students who secured MBBS admission through NEET-UG must submit the following documents to the college at the time of reporting –

  • Seat Allotment Letter
  • NEET-UG Score Card
  • Class 10 & Class 12 Pass Certificate or Mark Sheet
  • NEET Admit Card
  • Identity Proof
  • Eight Passport Size Photographs
  • Caste or Category Certificate (If Applicable)
  • PwD Certificate (If Applicable)

MBBS Admission Process in AIIMS through NEET

From the year 2020, AIIMS MBBS exam has been scrapped, and NEET is the only entrance exam in India for admission in MBBS course. AIIMS MBBS admission process begins in the month of July every year. However, from 2020, AIIMS MBBS admission dates shall comply with the NEET counselling dates, and MCC will be responsible for conducting the counselling process for AIIMS MBBS admissions. AIIMS New Delhi will not release the merit list of candidates, and a separate merit list will be released by MCC. Candidates who featured in the merit list of MCC AIQ are eligible for MBSS admission process of AIIMS.

MBBS Admission in JIPMER through NEET Entrance Exam

From the year 2020, JIPMER MBBS exam is scrapped, and NEET is the only entrance exam for the admission in MBBS course. JIPMER MBBS admission process begins in the month of June every year. However, from the year 2020, JIPMER MBBS admission dates shall comply with the dates of counselling conducted by MCC for the admission in MBBS course. All the seats in the MBBS course offered by the two campuses of JIPMER shall fall under the All India Quota, and the candidates aspiring for admission in JIPMER should compete for AIQ seats.

MBBS Fees in India

In India, the fees for MBBS course vary from one institute to another. In general, the MBBS fees under concession or convenor quota ranges from Rs. 50,000 – Rs. 5,00,000 per annum. In premier medical institutes like AIIMS, the MBBS fee will be approximately Rs. 10,000 per annum.
