Gain real-time experience in Internship
Focus on learning and enhancing knowledge of the particular topic/ project during the internship. Internship provides a chance for students to apply their knowledge into the practical world and gain corporate experience.
Internship is one of the most vital and fast ways of the experimental learning process, particularly in management education. They give us a quick practical learning curve of many topics, which we might, had gone through several times in the textbooks or learnt from our lectures repeatedly.
The key thing we need to keep in our mind is during the selection of the internship. Choosing the right internship as per our interest and passion is very important as it can be the stepping-stone of our final placements. Internships can sometimes find a niche area of our interest, which can put forth the direction towards the final placements.
In any management, a course like MBA or PGDM, summer internships are an inevitable part and embedded in the curriculum. Like most of the institutes, my institute allots the time for a summer internship during the break after the second semester for a period of a minimum of six weeks and a maximum of eight weeks. The College Internship Committee helps us to find internships in various firms for different projects, which might or might not be a paid one. However, it is not the responsibility of the institute to place all the students for an internship but it is the student’s responsibility to find the right internship project.
As I am a student who doing an MBA with specialisation in Healthcare Management and my supporting area of interest is Marketing and Operations. So, I focussed to grab internships in Healthcare corporate firms and was selected in a fertility chain corporate office as their Summer Intern in Marketing Communications.
Though the companies provide a particular topic for the project most of the time, I think we should learn as much as possible within the department we are placed in during the internship. This not only enhances our knowledge in that particular domain but also expands the scope of the opportunity in the final placements. The need to consistently focus on achieving a comprehensive knowledge of the sector, company, project, and the department can mould a successful intern.
The benefit of finding the right internship is that we get the right knowledge to strengthen our area of interest, which is crucial during the final placements. Nine out of ten times in any personal interview session of placements, the recruiter put forward the question on the experience gained as a summer intern. In my opinion, this should be the time we need to take full advantage of the interview and direct the interviewer is asking more questions on our internships by delivering a quick response and creating a positive impression. In another way, there are chances that the company in which we did our internship could call us back for the final placements depending on our performance. A key factor that I consider as my take away from my internship is the opportunity to network among different people in the corporate world.
