Aiming to bring about change and progress through education, the Tmt.Kannammal Educational Trust was constituted in 1985 and started Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College. Within three years of its inception, Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College was founded in 1988, and the Thai Moogambigai Dental College was started in the year 1991. Both the colleges acquired Deemed University status in 2003 as Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute as per the orders of the University Grants Commission, New Delhi and the Union Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India, New Delhi.

General Shivdev Singh Diwan Gurbachan Singh Khalsa College
The institute was founded in 1960 with the untiring efforts of Padam Shri Dr. Khushdeva Singh and Dr. Ganda Singh, the renowned historian who was also its first Principal.
It started with a humble beginning at Gurdwara Sri Dukhniwaran Sahib, Patiala with 5 rooms and a total strength of 35 students.
It was shifted to its present premises in the year 1973 for which the foundation was laid by the then Chief Minister of Punjab in 1972
The college was taken over by Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar, the apex body of the Sikhs in the year 1991.
The college then had around 18 classrooms and 3 Science labs
