The university was established in 1957 as an aided college by Padma Bhushan Dr. T.S. Avinashilingam under the jurisdiction of Avinashilingam Education Trust. The campus of Avinashilingam University is spread over an area of 111 acres of land. The university is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women is also recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). (H) and M.Sc. integrated, B.A. and B.Ed. integrated, B.Voc, PG diploma, M.Sc., M.Tech, M.B.A, M.A., M.Ed. and Ph.D. Admission to the courses is based on the merit marks of the candidates in CUCET. For Ph.D programme, UGC/NET/UGC-CSIR NET/SLET/ GATE/M.Phil qualified candidates can apply for admission without CUCET. The university has a total 97 well-qualified faculty members.
