The institute came into existence with a generous grant of 30,000 pounds from an American philanthropist, Mr. Henry Phipps. At that time IARI Delhi was known as Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) and it was functioning in Bihar. Later on in the year 1911 the name was changed to Imperial Institute of Agricultural Research and then again it was renamed as Imperial Agricultural Research Institute in the year 1919. The institute was relocated to Delhi in the year 1936 and post-independence it was renamed to  Indian Agricultural Research Institute. IARI Delhi got the status of a Deemed University in the year 1958.Â

The institute has been accredited by the NAAC and has been recognised by the University Grants Commission. With a total student enrollment of 289, the institute has a faculty strength of 28 members. The campus size of IARI Delhi is 1250 acres and it has several facilities such as hostel, sports, labs etc. for the students. Admission to Indian Agricultural Research Institute Delhi is offered at the postgraduate and doctoral levels. IARI Delhi admission is offered to the M.Sc, M.Tech and Ph.D programmes. As per the IARI Delhi admission process for the PG programmes, one has to take the Indian Council of Agricultural Research All India Entrance Examination for Admission (ICAR AIEEA). ICAR AIEEA is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). For Ph.D admission, the institute conducts an entrance examination followed by an interview. Candidates meeting the eligibility criteria for the respective courses they want to pursue have to submit the application form and then take the entrance exam. The application form for IARI Delhi admission for PG programmes will be available on the website of NTA ICAR. Verification of documents and payment of fees within the stipulated time period is mandatory to confirm the IARI Delhi admission. M.Sc and M.Tech programmes are offered by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute Delhi at the PG level. IARI Delhi admission fees for PG programmes is Rs. 28,350. Graduates with atleast 50% marks are eligible for IARI Delhi PG admissions.

Aspirants have to submit the ICAR AIEEA PG application form along with the scanned copies of all the necessary documents.
Next, candidates have to appear for the ICAR AIEEA PG and qualify it.
Qualifying candidates have to further participate in the ICAR AIEEA PG counselling wherein they have to select IARI Delhi as their first choice in the choice filling.Â
Once a seat has been allotted at IARI Delhi, candidates have to visit the campus and get the documents verified and pay the IARI Delhi fees.
The institute offers P.hD in various specializations such as genetics and plant breeding, agronomy, vegetable science, agricultural engineering, plant pathology, soil science and agricultural chemistry, molecular biology and biotechnology, agricultural chemicals, etc. Candidates holding a master degree in the relevant stream are eligible for the Ph.D programme.

It is to be noted that candidates have to secure at least 50% in order to qualify for the entrance exam.
Candidates qualifying the entrance exam have to appear and qualify an interview.
Final selection will be made on the basis of past academic record, marks obtained in the entrance examination and performance in the interview with a weightage of 10%, 80% and 20% respectively.

Facilities and infrastructure are very important for a student as well as an educational institution. A well-developed infrastructure attracts students and it also helps in the proper administration of the institution. IARI Delhi facilities help students in gaining an enhanced experience of learning at the campus. Hostels, library, sports, auditorium are some of the IARI Delhi facilities. The campus has a total of 8 hostels out of which there are 5 hostels for boys, 2 for girls and Saraswati Apartment for married couples. There are a total of five hostels for boys. Hemant, Vasant, Shishir, Rituraj and Sharad are the five boys hostels that provide accommodation facilities.
Varsha and Grishma are the two hostels for females that provide safe and secured accommodation. The hostel rooms are well furnished and have basic amenities.
The institute has a library named Prf. M S Swaminathan Library that has over of 3.75 lakh plus reading resources. Students can access the online resources 24X7. IARI Delhi library functions as the depository of FAO, IDRC and AVRDC publications along with the National Depository for CGIAR institutes publications.
Physical activities are very important for a student and therefore the institute provides necessary facilities for sports such as volleyball, cricket, football, hockey, tennis, badminton, and various other athletic events. As per the policy of IARI Delhi, every student has to subscribe to the Students Sports Fund at the beginning of each academic year.
IARI Delhi facilities include an auditorium that has been named after the ex-director of the institute Dr. B. P. Pal. The fully air-conditioned auditorium has a seating capacity of 350 people. The auditorium has a control room, rehearsal room, editing room, and VIP room. Apart from this auditorium, the campus has 9 other auditoriums in different divisions of Indian Agricultural Research Institute Dehli.
