Acharya Nagarjuna University College of Pharmaceutical SciencesHistory The name, Nagarjuna University is quite significant in that the great Buddhist preceptor and Philosopher Acharya Nagarjuna founded a University on the banks of river Krishna some centuries ago and made it a great centre of learning, attracting a large number of teachers and students form distant parts of the world. The University was established by Act 43 of 1976 of A.P. State Legislature and Governed by Act 4 of 1991 covering 6 Universities of the State. The present Acharya Nagarjuna University is not very far from the haloed spot, as it derives its moral and intellectual sustenance from Acharya Nagarjuna in which context the University has been renamed Acharya Nagarjuna University through the A.P. Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2004, promulgated by the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. The aspirations of the southern coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh to pursue Post-Graduate education nearer their homes resulted in the establishment of Acharya Nagarjuna University. In 1976, Andhra University started a Post-Graduate Centre in Nallapadu, Guntur Dt., Andhra Pradesh, as an Extension Center to cater to the needs of higher education of the people of this region. It is in the fitness of things that a University should grow from this Center to fulfill the desire of the people of this belt. Accordingly, Nagarjuna University came into being in August 1976.INTRODUCTION Acharya Nagarjuna University has completed three decades of its existence. It was inaugurated on 11th September, 1976 by the former President of India, Sri Fakruddin Ali Ahmed. There have been many problems, difficulties and teething problems in its onward march. In the course of the last 30 years, the University has successfully overcome most of the initial problems and is moving forward with determination, enthusiasm and hope. From the corridors of a local polytechnic college in Nallapadu to the imposing buildings in Nagarjuna nagar, the road was very long. Sacrifice, service and commitment marked the growth of Acharya Nagarjuna University.ACADEMIC PROGRESS Acharya Nagarjuna University, an affiliating University established in 1976, started with only 10 post-graduate courses in the University College. Since then, it has achieved tremendous progress through quantitative expansion and qualitative improvements on various academic fronts. This has been possible by the efforts of its dedicated faculty, an efficient team of supporting staff and high quality student input. The Acharya Nagarjuna University at present offers post-graduate education in 47 courses (39 on the University campus, 4 at University PG Campus at Nuzvid and 5 at University PG Campus at Ongole) besides Post-graduate courses in affiliated colleges.DEVELOPMENT OF POST-GRADUATE CENTRES The University has two post-graduate centers one at Nuzvid, Krishna District and the other at Ongole, Prakasam District. For the Post-Graduate Centre at Nuzvid.Affiliated Colleges University has got over 450 affiliated colleges in Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam Districts. Details of the collegesAcharya Nagajuna University since then has grown into a large University with 39 Academic Departments, including several self-financed courses, which started operating since 1992. Its jurisdiction was extended to three districts now having over 450 affiliated colleges offering Under-Graduate, Post-Graduate, Engineering, Education, Law, Pharmacy and Oriental Languages courses. Now it has 39 Post-graduate teaching-cum-research courses on the campus, while 71 affiliated colleges offered P.G. courses. The University runs two P.G. centers-one at Ongole (a fully self-financed center) and another at Nuzvid (aided).The University has been continuously achieving progress during these 30 years, in terms of introducing new subjects in the University College. For instance, two new P.G. courses, in Hindi, and Tourism & Travel management were introduced last year. New courses were started from the academic year: B.P. Ed. and M.P. Ed in the department of Physical Education, while M.B.A. in Health Administration, M. Ed in the department of Education and M.Sc. in Medical Technology are jointly awarded by A.N.U. and N.T.R. University of Health Sciences. Five year Integrated M.B.A., Programme in International Finance is started. This University has also pioneered the introduction of self-financed courses in the country, which is in conformity with the thinking of the national education policy makers such as the University Grants Commission. The University is making concerted efforts towards resource mobilization on different fronts.The policy of the University is to encourage the University College and the affiliated colleges to introduce job-oriented courses at the Degree and Post-Graduate levels. Academic autonomy was extended to four of the colleges as per the directions of the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. The University has ensured that, while there is a need for quantitative improvement with the increasing demand for higher education, from the community at large, the quality of education offered at various levels is also maintained at a high level. The University has been striving to maintain high academic standards in consonance with quantitative increase in the number of students being enrolled every year.Teaching and Research are the two eyes and twin goals of the faculty in the University College. The research programmes carried out in the various Departments cover both fundamental and applied areas. The academic Departments seek to find a reasonable and useful balance between the world of knowledge and its use and application in a more concrete and realizable form. The research programmes and course content focus on these issues and attempt to find solutions, so that feedback obtained by such an interaction could be used to bridge the gap between learning and its utility value.The Humanities and Social Sciences Departments in the Campus have been engaged in the task of studying the many socio-economic problems. Besides general areas, the research projects also cover a study of the problems of women, the oppressed classes of the society (both social and economic) and the problems of governance. The interaction between the funding agencies and their beneficiaries and the managerial problems in industries form other research pre-occupations of the University. The need for providing legal advice to the needy is winning the attention of the researchers.The Science Departments are engaged in carrying out work related to the growing scientific knowledge in solving the problems of society, like the study of pollution hazards and their prevention during development by isolating and characterizing the active principles from both floral and microbial sources; finding alternative energy sources, development of new varieties and hybrids in chilies, computer applications and software development augmenting and preserving fuel supplies and other bio-mass sources, defense research, exploring non-conventional energy sources, aquaculture development, liquid crystals preparation and study of their physical properties, microbiology and psychopathology, etc., all of which have a bearing on the day-to-day problems of society. Knowledge is thus not merely an end in itself but also a means to serve the society which funds the educational institutions and this practical side has not been ignored by the University. Emphasis on research, especially with a strong socio-economic bias has also made the University initiate schemes and projects of practical utility.

Andhra Christian College was founded with the ideal of providing for the youth of the country in general and of Guntur and other districts of Andhra Pradesh in particular the high type of Christian education. It holds to the Truism that secular training is insufficient and so to it seeks implant in its students, those truths which can raise men to a purer and nobler life and which are efficacious in the building up of character. Its sponsors trust that the men and women trained here will be filled with that spirit of service and inspired by those ideals of life which will lend them to dedicate their lives and talents to the best interest of their fellows and their country.

Andhra Christian College is a co-educational institution. Since 1926 the educational opportunities at Andhra Christian College have been opened to young women on equal terms with young men. The college endeavors to give its women students real college life and encourage their participation in all of its activities as the best means of preparing them for meeting the challenges of life which await them.

HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION

Andhra Christian College had its beginnings in the first Anglo – Vernacular school, which was already established in district collector’s compound and handed over in 1842 to Fr. Heyer who came to Guntur and established the American Evangelical Lutheran Mission in the same year. This school was supported by subscriptions from English friends of Missionary education then living in Guntur. Owing to financial and other difficulties due to civil war in America, the school was closed in 1863. And it was reopened in the year 1873, when it was re – organized by Dr. L.L. Uhl. From this time the school increased in number, service and influence. In September 1885, with Dr. L.B. Wolf as the Principal, the school was affiliated to the Madras University as a Second Grade College, known as the American Evangelical Lutheran Mission (A.E.L.M.) College. Through the efforts of Dr. Uhl and by the generous gifts of Mr. Arthur Watt and other friends in the United States, funds were secured with which the Watt’s Memorial Building was built. This building was first occupied in 1893.In 1907 Dr. Wolf retired from service in India and Dr. Uhl again assumed charge continuing as Principal until 1913 when he was succeeded by Dr. J. Roy Strock. In 1915 Dr. Uhl was appointed as Principal emeritus and in 1916 on Dr. Strock’s going on furlough, Rev. G.A. Ripely became the Principal and continued until Dr. Strock’s return to the College in 1919.In April 1922, Dr. Strock, at the invitation of the Church Missionary Society, assumed the Principalship of Noble College. Masulipatnam, and Dr. Victor Me. Cauley acted as Principal for the College until January 1923, when Dr. H.H. Sipes took charge Dr. Sipes served until January 1927 when Dr. Strock returned to the College.In 1925 in response to the invitation of Andhra Christian Council representing all the Christian Missions working in the Telugu area the U.L.C. Mission undertook the development of United Christian College for Andhra Pradesh. The Mission authorities under the leadership of Rev. J.Roy Strock, D.D. inaugurated a campaign in America for the raising of three hundred thousand dollars for the development of the College. The campaign was successful and practically the full amount required was secured. In March 1926 the College was affiliated to the Madras University as First Grade College offering courses in Mathematics, Philosophy and History for the B.A. Degree.

The Andhra University Act came into force in April 1926 and the first B.A. Class was admitted to the College in the following July. This development inaugurated a new era in the life of the institution which in the years following rapidly won outstanding place among the colleges of the university.

In January 1928 by an action of the Mission Council the name of the institution was changed from the A.E.L.M. College to Andhra Christian College.

Upon Dr. Strock’s going on furlough in January 1937, Dr. Sipes was appointed as the Principal. B.Sc. Courses in Mathematics and Physics were introduced in 1934 and negotiations were opened with Madras Government for the Old District Munsiffs Court site of 7 acres to provide additional land for College purpose.

In 1937 the District Muniffs Court site was purchased. In December 1938 upon the resignation of Dr. Strock, Mr. V Ch. John, M.A. LT. was appointed as Principal of the College. He assumed charge on January, 1,1939 and continued to serve until his retirement in June 1941 when he was succeeded by Dr. Sipes.

During the years 1938-41 the college carried out an extensive building programme under the supervision of the Rev. John Flnefrock, D.D. of the Mission Building Department. Heyer and Wolf Halls were erected at a cost of Rs. 40,000 to provide modern hostel accommodations for 300 students with the Luther League ndministration. Building providing additional class-rooms, offices nnd general room, a new Assembly Hall to seat 1,200 people were built and occupied from July, 1948. In January 1944, Dr. Sipes proceeded on furlough and Rev. C.H. Swavely served as Principal iinlil the return of Dr. Sipes in November 1945. Dr Sipes continued Principal till September 1948.

Rev. C.H. Swavely was acting Principal from September 1948 to April 1950.

Dr. T.S. Paulus was appointed as Principal and assumed charge from May 1, 1950 and sewed till his retirement in July 1962. Rev. C.H. Swavely became Bursar from May 1950 and left on furlough in November, 1955. Miss. Lilith Schawab assumed charge as Bursar of the College from November 1952 to June 1954. Rev. C.H. Swavely assumed charge as Bursar of the College on his return from furlough in July, 1954, until his retirement in April 1960.

During these years the college progressed in physical size and accommodation under the initiative of Dr. T.S. Paulus Principal and Mr. C.N. Devadanam, Bursar. The Strock Hall, the Recreation Hall, N.C.C. Building and the new Chemistry Laboratory, have been added to the College plant in recent years. This additional accommodation has ushered in a new progressive era in the life of the College.

Hindu CollegeStarted as a small Sanskrit School about 135 years ago, later developed into the Town High School.Great patriots like Sri T.T.Krishnamachari, Sri Kasu Brahmananda Reddy, Sri Kotha Raghuramaiah and Sri N.V.L.Narasimha Rao were students of the School.Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the then vice-chancellor of Andhra University and later President of India inaugurated the Hindu college in 1935, with a few Science departments and departments of languages. It become a first grade College in 1947.Originally affiliated to Andhra University and later to Nagarjuna University, the College got UGC recognition in 1956The College has to its credit maximum number of P.G. Courses sanctioned by the UniversityFounding Fathers :Great men and leading Members of the Guntur Bar like Sri Desiraju Hanumantha Rao, Annamraju Sitapati Rao, Madhavapeddi Hanumantha Rao, K.Narasimha Rao, Tumuluri Nagabhushanam, Kompalli Kotilingam and P.S.T.Sai were some of the stalwarts responsible for constituting it into a multifaceted educational and later Hindu College and High Schools Council.We Owe it to their vision for what we are today.200 years of British rule in India has produced only clerks -if not physically, mentally and attitudinally- and good-for-nothing “educated” householders. The need for ‘man-making' education, as Swami Vivekananda exhorted, had been felt all through the centuries in our country, especially in the Pre-Independence days. Guntur was no exception to the prevailing situation.In those days, Guntur was a small, nevertheless important town inhabited by great people, politicians, lawyers, doctors, literary luminaries, businessmen and educationists. It was a nerve center of activity in several fields, especially political. The contribution of Guntur to Freedom struggle is quite substantial. The visits of the two towering personalities, Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru in the 1930s to Guntur and Vijayawada bear the amplest testimony to this.Thus, when everything else was going on well, it was in the field of education that Guntur was just lagging behind. Madras was the only nearby city of reckoning for any well-meaning person to pursue higher education in those days of Composite Madras State. One can guess how affordable it was!It is precisely with this background that Hindu College was established in 1935, by a group of highly educated, patriotic and philanthropic gentlemen of Guntur, with the loftiest ideal of ‘dispelling darkness' from the society and to prevent any further erosion of values and virtues from all walks of life. The motto of our college, “Tamasoma jyotirgamaya”, taken from the “Brithadaranyaka Upanishad”, sumps up all this! 1935 is a historic year in the annals of the ever-growing town, Guntur, which occupies a significant place in Andhra Pradesh. It was in the year 1935 that the Hindu College was started with an aim to serve the community through education by employing time-tested methods of teaching and raising the moral standards of the student community. It was due to the untiring efforts of a group of dedicated men who illustrated the truth that sincerity and teamwork would lead to success in any field. The college has achieved the great heights that its founding fathers envisaged, through a constant and consistent endeavor to give quality education to the student community. The college has been rendering yeoman services to this cause for over 71 years. Though the college had its humble beginnings in 1935 from a small Sanskrit School, it soon became a full-fledged institution under the able, active and enthusiastic guidance of distinguished persons like Messrs. Kompalli Kotilingam, Desiraju Hanumantha Rao, Annamraju Sitapati Rao, Madhavapeddi Hanumantha Rao, Tumuluri Nagabhushanam, Majety Hanumantha Rao, Aka Dandaiah, M. Mastan Saheb, Tellakula Jalaiah, T. Venkata Rao, R. Bhaskara Rao, Maddi Sudarsanam,A. Lakshminarasimham, R.L. Somayaji, P.S.T. Sayee, Poluri Venkateswara Rao, N.S.R. Panthulu, Madhapeddi Radhakrishna Murthy and A.L.Narayana Rao, who served as Presidents, Vice-Presidents and Secretaries of the College Committee. Sri S.V.S. Somayaji, Chartered Accountant, served as Secretary and Correspondent till December 1998 during whose tenure a separate P.G. Campus was established in the year 1995. Sri S.V.S. Somayaji, the present President of the College Committee and Sri Ch. Ramakrishna Murthy, present Secretary and Correspondent are known for their service to the cause of education and their devotion to the all-round development of the College. Jagarlamudi Kuppuswamy Choudary CollegeThe Nagarjuna Education Society was framed in 1967 by some educationanists,philanthropists and older folks who understood the requirement for another school in Guntur,as the current universities in the city couldn't adapt to the developing interest for advanced education among the general population of the city and its neighborhood. Vignan’s Foundation for Science Technology and Research (VFSTR) is a deemed to be university established in the year 2008. The university is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). With a CPGA of 3.2, NAAC has accredited Vignan University with an ‘A’ grade. The university has grabbed 111 rank in engineering category of NIRF Ranking 2021. It moved up 7 position as it was ranked 118 in NIRF Engineering Ranking 2020.
