The institute came into existence with a generous grant of 30,000 pounds from an American philanthropist, Mr. Henry Phipps. At that time IARI Delhi was known as Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) and it was functioning in Bihar. Later on in the year 1911 the name was changed to Imperial Institute of Agricultural Research and then again it was renamed as Imperial Agricultural Research Institute in the year 1919. The institute was relocated to Delhi in the year 1936 and post-independence it was renamed to Indian Agricultural Research Institute. IARI Delhi got the status of a Deemed University in the year 1958.
The institute has been accredited by the NAAC and has been recognised by the University Grants Commission. With a total student enrollment of 289, the institute has a faculty strength of 28 members. The campus size of IARI Delhi is 1250 acres and it has several facilities such as hostel, sports, labs etc. for the students. Indian Society of Agricultural Science, Indian Society of Agronomy, Indian Society of Agro-Physics, Indian Society of Extension Education, Indian Society of Genetics & Plant Breeding, Indian Society of Horticultural, Indian Society of Plant Physiology, Indian Society of Seed Technology, Indian Society of Soil Science and Indian Society of the Clay Minerals are some of the professional societies at IARI Delhi. Kalindi College was established in 1967 as a constituent college of the University of Delhi and it is only for women.
