What is BTech Mining Engineering?

BTech Mining Engineering is a 4-year undergraduate course that is a branch of engineering that deals with the theory, science, application, and technology of processing and extracting resources from the natural environment.

BTech Mining Engineering is a discipline of engineering which is concerned with teaching the students how to cope up with the demands for minerals of all kinds in an efficient and sustainable manner. This engineering course fulfills the rising demand for mining engineers. Other than training students for extraction and processing of mineral commodities, BTech Mining Engineering Syllabus equips the students with a tendency to constantly look for innovative methods of mining that mitigate the resultant damage by the mining process.

To be eligible for this BTech course, a candidate needs to pass a higher secondary board exam with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics from a recognized board with above 60% marks. The admission mode for BTech Mining Engineering is through entrance exams such as JEE Main, JEE Advanced, and various other entrance exams BTech Mining Engineering Exam conducted by the states such as MHT CET, PTU CET, UPSEE, WBJEE, etc.

IIT Kharagpur, IIT Varanasi, IIT Dhanbad, NIT Rourkela are some of the top colleges offering BTech Mining Engineering.

The various specializations in this BTech course are ventilation, a design of engineering structures, environmental aspects of mining, rock mechanics, industrial management, computer applications etc.

For BTech Mining Engineering, the average tuition fee ranges from INR 2 to10 Lakhs depending on colleges offering this course. After graduating, the students have a variety of Career Options in different sectors such as education, mining industry, processing industry, capital equipment, locomotive platform, and mining equipment.

  1. To be eligible for this course, a candidate has to pass a higher secondary examination from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as subjects.
  2. The students who have appeared in the 12th examination and await the result are allowed to apply for the course by such institutions.
  3. Students should have a score of above 60% to apply for this course.

Female candidates are barred from taking up this course in almost all the BTech Mining Engineering colleges. However, recently Anna University has allowed admission in this BTech program but under some conditions under Mines Act 1952. According to this, the women would not be allowed to work on opencast mines between 6 am to 7 pm. The restrictions under Coal Mines Regulations, 1957 would also be imposed on women seeking admission in mining engineering.

The most common route to this course is through the entrance exam. Some colleges offer students a direct entry to the students on the basis of merit list.

Every institute follows a selection process of its own. However, most of them accept scores of entrance tests. Some of them proceed with the students who qualify the entrance exams and move them to the next filtering stage, which is a personal interview.

Some universities offer two pathways for admission such as examination and non-examination pathways. Under the examination pathway, the candidates need to appear for the entrance examination. For this, the candidate should have scored a minimum of 60% marks at higher and senior secondary level and 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in 12th class.

Whereas, under the non-examination pathway, the admissions are done through board merit. A minimum of 80% marks at higher and senior secondary level and 80% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in 12th class is required for admission through board merit.

For admission through JEE mains, a candidate needs a minimum of 60% marks at higher and senior secondary level and 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in 12th class.

BTech Mining Engineering Entrance Exams

The entrance exam is the preferred mode to take admission to most of the institutions. Some of the top entrance exams are discussed below.

  1. JEE Mains: This exam is conducted in the months of December and January. For Paper 1, students can opt for either a pen paper-based exam or an online exam.
  2. JEE Advanced: It is the exam for IIT aspirants and Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad which is available for online admission and application selection.

Tabulated below are some of the important dates of JEE Main and JEE Advanced.

Tabulated below are some of the entrance exams held by autonomous universities for BTech Mining Engineering admission.

BTech Mining Engineering course is not offered by all the engineering colleges throughout India, few colleges offering the course are listed below along with the average fees and placement structure.

This BTech Mining Engineering syllabus trains the students to enable them to improve and innovate mining techniques and technologies. The importance of these techniques is to responsible recovery and judicious use of mineral resources are taught to the students. It helps to instill a mentality that sees the students become proficient at the extraction and processing of mineral commodities and responsive to the needs from an environmental perspective.

The syllabus may vary with institute to institute but it generally covers the following topics:

The BTech course is designed to encourage students to pursue cross traditional modules of mining engineering and seek employable opportunities.

With a specialized technical Mining Engineering degree, one can get job offers from core mining or allied organizations.

Pursuing mining engineering gives candidates an opportunity to work in the exploration and research field. The candidates placed in a private sector can earn around INR 3.5 to 6 LPA while in the public sector they can earn around INR 7.5 LPA.

The table below shows the various job profiles offered to the BTech Mining Engineering graduates.

After completion of this course, the students can study further to enhance their qualifications. They can go for M.Tech Mining Engineering from universities like Indian School of Mines University, IIT Kharagpur, and NIT Rourkela to elevate their knowledge level from working to advanced.

Besides, if the student holds an interest in research then they may pursue M.Phil. in Mining Engineering from the Indian School of Mines University.
