The foundation of the present-day National Institute of Technology - NIT Patna was laid in 1886 as Bihar School of Training which was later renamed as Bihar College of Engineering in 2004. The National Institute of Technology - NIT Patna is now a fully autonomous technical institute functioning directly under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). NIT Patna is one of the top engineering colleges in Bihar. The status of National Institute of Technology was given to Bihar College of Engineering as it lost its only Regional College of Engineering (REC) situated in Jamshedpur after the partition of Jharkhand from Bihar in 2000. According to the National Institutes of Technology act 2007, it has been granted the status of Institute of National Importance.
