Entrance Exams for Studying in Canada – GRE, GMAT, SAT, IELTS, TOEFL
To study in Canada or abroad, students need to demonstrate their language efficiency and aptitude to take admission in the desired institution. Canada is a bilingual country with two languages, English and French. The language may change depending upon the area.

English Language Test in Canada- IELTS, PTE, TOEFL

TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language
TOEFL measures the ability of a non-native English speaker to communicate in English language.
- TOEFL is apt for the people who are seeking student visa for admission into universities of Canada.
- It tests the examinee on the basis of reading, listening, writing and speaking categories.
- TOEFL score is accepted in more than 10,000 institutions around the world.
- It is not accepted by Canada in case, the person is seeking immigration. Only IELTS or CELPIP are the tests valid for that process.
- The score must be less than two years from the first day of the class.

Though TOEFL is a well-recognized exam for English language proficiency but still, IELTS is preferred by considerable number of Canadian Universities.
Exemptions
- If the students achieve the score of minimum 35 in SAT reading test, they are exempted from taking TOEFL and they do not need to request a TOEFL waiver. TOEFL will automatically be waived off when the application reaches the university.
- Student who scores more than 670 in the critical reading section for OLDSAT exam or Reading Test score more than 35.
- Exemption may also be provided to the students who have studied for at least 4 years from an institution where English is the official language.

IELTS – International English Language Testing System
IELTS is organized to assess the English language proficiency of a candidate who is looking forward to go to a place where English language is used for communication. IELTS score is required for entry to Canada or other countries.

Exemptions
- If the student resides in English-speaking nation for at least 4 years is exempted from IELTS

PTE – Pearson Test of English
There are two types of exams for PTE: –

PTE Academic
It is a computer-based exam aimed for non-native English population who wants to take admission abroad. It is a multi-level test. One advantage of PTE is that its results are revealed within 5 days from the date of test.
PTE is conducted throughout the year at its designated centers across the globe.

French Language Proficiency Test
Test d’Évaluation de Français pour le Canada (TEF) is a test of French language to measure the proficiency of the examinee in spoken and written French language.

One is suggested to write TEF instead of TEFAQ as TEF is acceptable for Quebec and federal immigration while TEFAQ is acceptable only for Quebec immigration.

Sometimes GMAT is also known as GMAT CAT. CAT is an acronym of Computer Adaptive Test. It means the test adapts to the examinee’s ability.
GRE general test is almost replaceable with GMAT. Canada accepts GRE scores for business schools too.
Unlike GRE, GMAT does not require high efficiency English from the aspirant. The exam judge’s the candidate on the basis of verbal, mathematical and analytical criteria.
GMAT prefers analytic thinking. GRE judge’s the student on the basis of knowledge base while GMAT as earlier considers the student on the basis of analytical thinking.
Therefore, GMAT CAT is considered to be a hard test.
Limitation: GMAT is only meant for management students while GRE has a broad base with maximum technical and non-technical tests.
