  • Some of the reasons of interruptions that can be considered valid are childrearing, illness, clinical training (residency) and allow up to 2 years of maximum extension of your eligibility window.

Things to keep in mind

  • In case an applicant is not the citizen or permanent resident of Canada, he/she may only hold their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at a Canadian institution.
  • In case an applicant is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, but has obtained his/ her PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree from a foreign university may only hold their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at a Canadian institution.
  • In case an applicant is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada and has obtained his/ her PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree from a Canadian university are allowed to hold their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at either a Canadian institution or an institution outside of Canada.

Canada Graduate Scholarships- Master’s Program

The Canada Graduate Scholarships- Master’s Program is awarded to high caliber scholars pursuing eligible master’s programs in Canada. Highly qualified personnel is selected on the basis of their achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies.

  • Program selected by the student will only be considered as an eligible graduate program if it has a significant research component. In case the Master’s program is only based on course work, it won’t be considered eligible.

How to Apply?

  • Visit the research portal to complete and submit the application.
  • Click on Create Applications to have a look at the funding programs available to you. Select the CGS M Program and click on Create.
  • A complete application must include:
    1. Application form;
    2. Outline of the proposed research (including the bibliography and citations);
    3. All required undergraduate and graduate transcripts;
    4. CGS M Canadian Common CV (CCV);
    5. Two reference assessments.

Every application must adhere to the presentation guidelines mentioned on the portal. Once you are done with all sections, click on submit.

Things to keep in mind

  • Applicants must ensure that they are submitting their application to an institution that has an allocation for the field of research they intend to pursue.
  • Must prove his/ her academic excellence. He/she must have achieved a first-class average in each of the last two completed years of study (as determined by the host institution)
  • Submit your application to an institution which is an eligible Canadian institution and already has an allocation for the field in which you would like to pursue your research.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program

The Canadian government offers Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships to attract highly qualified doctoral students to study in Canada at a participating university.

  • In case a candidate is pursuing a joint undergraduate/ graduate research program, they must note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding.

IDRC Research Awards

The Canadian Government offers IDRC Research scholarship to Canadian and foreign residents pursuing or have completed their master’s or a doctoral degree at a recognized university. Organization of American States (OAS) Academic Scholarship Program

The Organization of American States (OAS) conducts a multilateral scholarship program for citizens of OAS Member states. According to this program, a graduate student belonging to one OAS member state can avail scholarship to study at another OAS member state.

  • Renewable of the scholarship will be dependent on the performance of the student in the first academic year and the confirmation of the institution to renew the scholarship for the second year.

Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED)

The Department of Foreign Affairs, Global Affairs Canada funds SEED scholarships to students of ASEAN member states to help them study in Canada.

Note: You are an ASEAN member state if you are a citizen of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos (Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR)), Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, or Vietnam).

Canada-CARICOM Leadership Scholarships Program

Canada-CARICOM Leadership Scholarships Program offers scholarships to students from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) for short-term exchange opportunities for study or research, in Canada, at the college, undergraduate and graduate levels.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The Federal Government runs FAFSA, a financial aid to help U.S students and non U.S students with valid Social security number, pay for their educational expenses at an eligible college or career school. Financial aid is provided in the form of grants, loans and work-study.

Under FAFSA, students can be provided financial aid from the U.S. federal government, the state where you live, the college you attend, or a nonprofit or private organization.

Eligibility

The applicant must:

  • Be a U.S Citizen/ U.S National or non US citizens with a valid Social Security Number
  • Be qualified enough to apply for college or career school education.
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a eligible degree or certificate program as a regular student
  • Be registered with selective service if they are a male and between the age of 18 and 25 years.
  • Have a valid SSN i.e Social security number.
  • Maintain a satisfactory performance at the college or career school you are enrolled in.
  • Not hold any other federal student grant under their name.
  • Not have defaulted any other federal student loans.

Note: Citizens of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, or the Republic of Palau can be exempted from having SSN.

How to apply?

Interested and eligible students must fill out the FAFSA form. There are three ways to apply for the scholarship.

  • Online- Visit the official website of FAFSA and then click on apply online.
  • Offline- Download FAFSA Application form. Print out FAFSA PDF and mail the same for further processing.
  • Request print out- You can call the at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) or 334-523-2691 (TTY for the deaf or hard of hearing 1-800-730-8913) for a printout of FAFSA PDF, fill out the form and mail it for further processing.

Filling out the FAFSA form

Filling out the application form is a simple and easy process. The application consists of various questions to determine whether you are a dependent or independent student for applying for federal student aid.

In case you are a dependent student, you will have to provide your parents information along you’re your own information.

Creating an FSA ID
