The institute was founded in the year 1986 by the SRIKET (Sri Krishnadevaraya Educational Trust). The institute is approved by the AICTE & NBA. The Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology is also ISO certified and is affiliated to the Visvesvaraya Technological University. The institute aims at becoming a centre of excellence in technical and management education that simultaneously focuses on disciplined and integrated personality development through quality education, sports, cultural and co-curricular activities.The institute has nine B.E. offerings. Degree programs in Civil, Electrical & Electronics, Mechanical, Electronics & Communications, Computer Science & Engineering, Industrial Engineering & Management, Telecommunications, Information Science and Bio-Technology with Four other Masters programs in Computer Applications, Business Administration, Computer Integrated Manufacturing and Electronics.
