The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level examination, which is conducted for candidates seeking admission in Post Graduate Programmes (M.E., M.Tech, MS, Direct Ph.D.) offered at institutes of national importance, including IITs and IISc, etc. with financial assistance from MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development). The GATE scores are also used by various PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings) to recruit candidates for prestigious jobs. A total of 24 papers are conducted as part of GATE examination. Candidates can apply for only one of the papers based on the discipline of their qualifying degree or their admission plan. While applying for the paper of their choice, candidates must also keep in mind the eligibility criteria set by the institutions where they wish to get admission. GATE, which is also known as Graduate Admission Test in Engineering is conducted to assess and analyse the comprehensive understanding of the aspirants in various undergraduate subjects like Architecture, Technology and Engineering and also some post-graduate level subjects in Science. IISc Bangalore and seven IITs (Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Guwahati, Madras, Kharagpur and  Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board conduct the GATE 2020 exam.

GATE 2020 will be conducted for 25 subjects, and the official GATE exam dates 2020 are 1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th of February. GATE exam takes place across various centres/ cities in India, and the same will be conducted in six overseas or abroad centres. GATE is a Computer-Based Test.

Qualifying GATE is mandatory in order to get admission or vail financial assistance to pursue a Master’s programme and direct Doctoral programme. Recently quite a number of Public Sector Undertakings have been accepting GATE score for their recruitment process. 

The GATE score would reflect the relative performance level and capability to pursue a particular subject. The GATE 2020 score will be valid for three years which means this score will be considered by the institutes for up to 3 years from the date of examination.

As mentioned above the GATE 2020 will be held across the entire country and also in some cities outside India. Here is the list which shows the GATE 2020 zones for the applicants to choose.

Assistantship/ Scholarship for Post Graduate Programme

This particular facility is provided for the candidates wishes to avail financial assistance. In order to avail this opportunity, the candidates will have to secure their admission in one of the Central Government colleges. Almost 70% of the weightage is given to the GATE score and the remaining depends on the candidate’s performance in the interview and other rounds. 

The Assistantship /Scholarship is provided by the MHRD ministry so the candidates can avail this assistance following the guidelines given by the MHRD ministry. All the institutes would specify the number of candidates they are willing to take accordingly the candidates can secure their admission. Qualification in GATE is also a minimum requirement to apply for various fellowships awarded by many Government organizations.

GATE Score Used for PSU Recruitment

The Public Sector Undertakings use the GATE score to shortlist the candidates for Recruitment. Some of the organisations which accept the GATE score is GAIL, BHEL, IOCL, HALNTPC etc. Through this GATE score, candidates would get employed in a Group A level post under the Central Government. The details about the GATE score being used for recruitment is published in National Newspaper, Rozgar Samachar, Employment news etc.

Highlights of GATE 2020

  • Here are the highlights of GATE 2020 which all the applicants of GATE 2020 must know. 

  • The GATE 2020 will be conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. 

  • Gate 2020 will be conducted for 25 science subjects/papers.

  • The GAT 2020 for 25 subjects will be held online that is the GATE 2020 is a Computer Based Test. 

  • An applicant of GATE 2020 can appear for only one paper/subject in GATE 2020.

  • GATE 2020 will be held in the forenoon or afternoon. Sessions on 1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th of February 2020. 

  • A new subject named “BIO Medical Engineering” will be included in the GATE 2020.  

  • Some of the papers in papers in GATE 2020 are held in multiple sessions but one candidate would be allowed to appear for only one session. 

  • Candidates will have to register and apply online through GATE Online Application Processing System i.e GOAPS. The submission of application will also be online, candidates must note that no hardcopy should be sent to the exam authority.

  • Random Biometric test might be done of some selected candidates. 

  • The decision of GATE 2020 becomes the final decision for all candidates. 

  • The GATE application fee can be paid only through online methods, there is no offline method.

  • The GATE 2020 admit card will be available at the GOAPS website. No printed admit card or hard copy of the admit card will be sent to the candidates. 

  • Candidates must look for the exam date, time and venue in the GATE 2020 admit card. 

  • Any changes in the exam centre or date or time will not be entertained by the exam conducting body once the admit card is provided for the candidate. 

  • No Calculator, watch or wristwatch or mobile phone will be allowed within the examination centre. Availability of these items with the candidates might disqualify the candidature of the candidate.

Advantages of Appearing in GATE?

The biggest question that the students might have in their mind is what are the advantages of appearing in GATE. There are many advantages of appearing in GATE for the students but the major advantages that such students will have are:

  • They can pursue Post Graduation degree in the course they desire as GATE scores are also accepted by the top technology and science Institutes for M.Tech admissions

  • The students can get into the Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) on the basis of their GATE rank
