Selkirk College, established in 1966, is the oldest regional community college located in Kootenays, British Columbia, Canada. The College offers Post-Secondary Certificates, Diplomas and Associate degrees in various programs. Applications are accepted 12 months preceding the start of most programs. Here are a few common steps that one has to follow to fill in the application form.

- Sign up for a new account at EducationPlannerBC at and fill online application OR
- Download the application, print and complete the application and submit at one of the campuses
- Non-refundable application fee to be paid is CAD $100.
- Submit all previous transcripts and letters of reference to the College

Work While You Study
On Campus
Students can work on campus while studying at the institute through the work-study program. For this, they will have to fulfil the following conditions:
- Have a valid study permit
- Have a SIN (Social Insurance Number)
Students can work between one to ten hours per week and earn $11.35 per hour.
Off Campus
Students can also work off campus while studying at the institute. They will have to fulfil the following conditions:
- Have a valid study permit
- Have a co-op work permit (if required)
- Currently be enrolled in an academic degree, diploma, or certificate program at Selkirk College (students taking only English as a Second Language courses are not eligible)
- Have maintained satisfactory academic standing in your program of study
- Studying to obtain a degree, diploma or certificate with duration of at least 6 months
- Have a SIN (Social Insurance Number)
Students can work for 20 hours per week during term and full time during scheduled breaks.
How to get a SIN?
SIN is mandatory in order to work on campus or off campus and for tax purposes. It is no way related to a person’s health insurance number. A social number is valid until the end of your stay or a maximum 5 years. You can renew the same if necessary.
One can obtain SIN by going in person to Service Canada office along with the following documents:
- Passport
- Study permit
- Off campus work permit/ co-op/internship program permit.
Work After Graduation
One can work post their graduation after obtaining a work permit. The post-graduation work permit is valid for the same duration as that of the last study program you have completed. Students have to fulfil the following conditions.
- Must have been a full-time student in Canada
- Completed with a study program with minimum duration of 8 months
- Apply for the work permit within 90 days of receiving a document declaring completion of studies.
- Must have a valid study permit.

The College has two of its own residential halls/houses at campuses – Kekuli House at Castlegar and the other at Tenth Street (Nelson). Depending on the room type one might pay between $1520 and $3060 per term.
