NEW DELHI: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially opened the registration for the Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main 2025) for candidates eager to take their first attempt in January. According to the timeline, the final date to register for JEE Main is November 22. Aspiring candidates are encouraged to review the comprehensive eligibility requirements to qualify for BTech admissions for the upcoming academic year 2025-26.

The JEE Mains session 1 exam is set to begin on January 22, taking place at various venues across India and internationally. This examination will cover the BE, BTech, BArch, and B Planning papers. As a national-level entrance test, it serves as a pathway for admission into B Tech programs at National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), centrally-funded technical institutes (CFTIs), and other affiliated colleges.

Students who successfully clear the exam and secure a rank within the top 2.5 lakh will qualify to take the JEE Advanced 2025, which is essential for gaining admission to IITs. The JEE Main session 1 for 2025 is scheduled from January 22 to January 31, while session 2 will occur from April 1 to April 8.

Eligibility for JEE Mains 2025

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains is one of the most prestigious engineering entrance exams in India, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). To ensure a smooth application process and to prepare adequately, candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria-

1. Age Limit

• There is no specific age limit to appear for JEE Mains. However, candidates must meet the age criteria set by the respective institutions where they intend to apply.

2. Educational Qualification

• Qualifying Examination: Candidates must have passed their Class 12 or equivalent examination with Physics, Mathematics, and at least one of the following subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, or Technical Vocational Subject.
• Minimum Marks: A minimum of 75% marks in Class 12 or equivalent examination is required for admission into the IITs, NITs, and other central universities. For SC/ST/PwD candidates, the minimum requirement is 65%.

3. Year of Appearance

• Candidates who are appearing for their Class 12 or equivalent examination in 2025 are also eligible to apply for JEE Mains 2025.
• Students who have passed their Class 12 in 2023 or 2024 can also apply.

4. Number of Attempts

• Candidates can appear for JEE Mains a maximum of three times in consecutive years.

5. Subject Combination

• Candidates must have taken the subjects Physics and Mathematics, along with any one of the following: Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Technical Vocational Subject in their Class 12 exams.

List of qualifying exams

• The Class 12 board exam administered by any recognized central or state educational board, including the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE).
• The Intermediate or two-year Pre-University exam (PUC) conducted by an accredited board or university.
• The final examination for the two-year course at the Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy.
• The Senior Secondary School Examination organized by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), requiring a minimum of five subjects.

• Any public school, board, or university examination in India or abroad that is acknowledged as equivalent to the Class 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
• The Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination.
• A diploma recognized by the AICTE or a state board of technical education, lasting at least three years.
• The General Certificate of Education (GCE) examination at the Advanced (A) level from London, Cambridge, or Sri Lanka.
• The High School Certificate Examination from Cambridge University or the International Baccalaureate Diploma from the International Baccalaureate Office in Geneva.
• Candidates who have completed their Class 12 or an equivalent exam outside India or from an unlisted board must provide a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) confirming that their examination is equivalent to the Class 12 Examination.
• It is essential for candidates to have passed at least one public examination, either the Class 12 board exam or the pre-university exam.

What is the state code of eligibility?

When a candidate completes their Class 12 exam in one state but takes improvement exams in another, the state code of eligibility is determined by the state where they originally passed the qualifying exam, not where they took the improvement tests. Candidates who have completed or are currently taking the Class 12 exam through NIOS should choose their state of eligibility based on the location of their study center. For Indian nationals who have taken the Class 12 exam in Nepal or Bhutan, eligibility is based on the permanent address in India as stated in their passport. Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who complete their Class 12 education at institutions outside India can apply for other state quota seats or All India quota seats, but they are not eligible for Home State quota seats in any NITs, IIITs, or Other-CFTIs.
