The university was established in 1985 as Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute by Sri Ramachandra Educational and Health Trust. In 1994, the Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research was declared as a deemed university by the Government of India. SRIHER is a self-financed private institute. Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research has been ranked 79th in NIRF 2021 rankings in the overall category. In the dental category, as per the NIRF ranking for the year 2021, the university has been ranked 8th whereas the NIRF ranking for the year 2020 in the dental category was 7. The institute has secured 14th rank in the medical category in NIRF 2021 ranking. As per the NIRF ranking for the year 2021, the institute has been ranked 47 in the university category with an overall score of 47.17. The institute has been ranked 21st in the pharmacy category by the NIRF in 2021. The university is National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accredited with grade A++. The university is accredited by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH), AERB, NABL and ISO 9001:2000 certified.

Candidates have to follow the university admission process for admission to Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research courses. Candidates have to appear for an interview or all India entrance test, wherever required. The total number of faculty members in the university is 692. It is located at a distance of 13 km and would take approx. 30 minutes to reach by cab or auto. The nearest railway station is Avadi Railway Station. The distance between the railway station and the university is 13.2 km. By cab or auto, it would take approximately 29 minutes to reach SRIHER. Gangai Amman Kovil is the nearest bus stop. It is 4.4 km away from the university and would take 12 minutes to reach the campus.
