Shawnee State University is a prestigious public university in Portsmouth city in Ohio, United States of America. Although the history of the institute dates back to 1945, when the Ohio University built an academic center at Portsmouth High School, the foundation of Shawnee State University was only laid in the year 1985, as the Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, Vern Riffe, introduced the bill to form the university. On April 2, 1986, Gov. Richard Celeste signed HB 739, creating Shawnee State University. The bill became law on July 2. In its first year, Shawnee State University enrolled 2,797 students. Currently, over 3250 students are enrolled at the university and nearly 1000 of them are residing on campus.

Shawnee State University offers over 70 Master’s, Bachelor’s, and Associate (2 years) degree programs for students to pursue. From which they can choose an area of study that combines their skills and passions. The university has the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Professional Studies, and School of Education under its supervision. Academic departments at the university include Business Administration, Engineering Technologies, Humanities & English, Performing, Digital & Fine Arts, Health Sciences, Individualized Studies, Natural Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Nursing, and Social Sciences. Students pursuing Bachelor’s degree can pursue in any of the following disciplines – History, Healthcare Administration, Accounting, Geology, and others. The university also offers online certificate degrees.

Clubs on the university campus include Fantanime, Art Club, History Club, Geology Club, Chemistry Club, Pre-Med Club, Political Science Club, International Game Developer’s Association (IGDA), Sexuality and Gender Acceptance (SAGA), as well as an international group named the Other World Society.

Career Services at Shawnee State University offer resources and support to every student right from the first day, which helps to prepare them for a career ahead of graduation. The service cell also provides support for alumni who are pursuing new goals and can help pave the path to success. Students at Shawnee can make the best use of their Handshake account, a career platform that helps aspiring graduates to find various internship and job opportunities, connect with recruiters and students from other colleges and allow them to set job alerts. Students can make appointments with the Career Services and register for upcoming SSU career events through this platform. Through internships, recruiters will be provided with trained and skilled employees fit for job roles in their specialized areas.

Shawnee State University awards financial aid amounting to a hefty $25 million annually through a combination of loans, grants, scholarships, and college work-study programs. Much of this assistance is need-based and is determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). However, merit scholarships are offered strictly based on the students’ academic achievements and are not tied to need-based financial assistance.

Shawnee State University (SSU) Scholarships

Rosa Hartsook Endowed Scholarship

One scholarship for a resident enrolled in a graduate educational program in Ohio who is a registered occupational therapist or a certified occupational therapy assistant who is doing graduate study in a field related to occupational therapy in an Ohio University. Scholarship amount TBD.

MGMA Midwest Section Scholarship

Individuals residing in MGMA Midwest section states (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin) who are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program relevant to medical practice management. Scholarship Eligibility: Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program relevant to medical practice management.

Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG)

What is it? The Ohio Board of Regents administers the Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG) program, which provides grant money to Ohio residents who demonstrate the highest levels of financial need (as determined by the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) that should be completed) who are enrolled at Ohio public university main campuses.

Department President’s Scholarship

The American Legion Auxiliary Department of Ohio awards one scholarship of $1,500 and one scholarship of $1,000 annually for students preparing to enter his or her freshman year of college. The applicant must be a veteran or a direct descendant of an honorably discharged veteran.

Ohio War Orphans Scholarship

What is it? The Ohio War Orphans Scholarship Program awards tuition assistance to the children of deceased or severely disabled Ohio veterans who served in the armed forces during a period of declared war or conflict. Who is eligible? To receive War Orphans Scholarship benefits, a student must be enrolled for full-time undergraduate study and pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree at an eligibile.

Ohio Safety Officers College Memorial Fund

What is it? This program provides tuition assistance to the children and spouses of peace officers, fire fighters and certain other safety officers who are killed in the line-of-duty, anywhere in the United States.

Lloyd A. Chacey, P.E. Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria – for ALL Scholarships (exceptions noted) *3.0 minimum grade point average (A=4) *Minimum SAT (Math=600, Reading or Composition=500) or ACT (Math=29, English=25) *Citizen of the U.S. & permanent resident of Ohio $2,000/year Renewable for one year. One chosen each year.

Accountancy Board of Ohio Education Assistance Program

The Board has an education assistance program for students who can demonstrate financial need. The program is designed to reimburse tuition expenses for the fifth year of study required for CPA certification in Ohio. No funds can be paid if a student already qualifies for admission to the CPA examination. The Board sends grant payments directly to the college or university.

Ohio State University/Motorsports Team/SAE Engineering Scholarship

Student Eligibility: Incoming (first year or transfer) students. Undergraduate scholarship winners will be selected on the basis of demonstrated potential to contribute to the success of Ohio State’s motorsports teams. Prior participation in successful team efforts, technical aptitude, leadership potential, and a solid record are all important elements in the selection process.

University of Toledo/SAE Engineering Scholarship

Student Eligibility: Applicants must be incoming freshmen to the College of Engineering who are citizens of the United States. Terms: One $1,000 scholarship is being offered. Wright State University/SAE Engineering Scholarship

Student Eligibility: This merit scholarship is for a freshman in any program in the College and will be awarded on basis of scholarship and achievement. Applicant may also be considered for other university scholarships based on merit and achievement. Terms: One $1,000 freshman nonrenewable scholarship will be offered.

Innovation in Education Scholarship

LA Tutors awards a monthly $500 Innovation Scholarship to high school and college students who showcase their creativity and make a positive impact.

Smart Classroom: The college has modern facilities and fully equipped Smart Classroom. It is a tool for more effective and efficient teaching. The motive of college is to standardize all multimedia equipment in every classroom to allow faculty to have the same technical control and capabilities no matter where they are taught on campus.

The library is open 91 hours per week and the library’s sizable electronic collection is open 24/7 at library.shawnee.edu.
