Based on the above comparison, there is a vast difference between the lowest JAM score required for admission to IIT Madras and IIT Hyderabad. The lowest cutoff rank for getting admission to IIT-M is 51 for M.Sc. in Mathematics.
IIT Kanpur has easily managed to beat IIT-M in terms of the score required to get an admission in M.Sc., the opening score required for admission to M.Sc. Physics is 1 whereas admission to the same, requires a rank of 80 at IIT Madras.

IIT Madras is ranked 1st in the Engineering category by NIRF Ranking 2020 and on a global scale, the institute has been ranked at the 50th position by QS 2021 Asia Ranking. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has maintained an excellent placement record over the years. The institute witnessed a breakthrough in terms of placements as a total of 1300 students participated in the recruitment drive. The college has seen an increase in the number of international offers, although domestic offers dominated.
IIT Madras kick-started its 2020-21 placement drive from December 1, 2020. So far over 186 PPOs have been offered, bypassing last year’s total PPOs of 170. The institute witnessed the participation of 22 companies that made a total of 123 offers in the first session on December 1, 2020. Within a week since the inauguration of the 2021 placement drive, a total of 725 placement offers have been bagged by the students.
During the 2019-2020 placement drive, A total of 102 job offers were made by 20 companies during the first session of Phase I placements of the IIT Madras; the offers include four international offers. The first slot of Day 1 of IIT Madras placements commenced on December 1, 2019, Sunday at 7 am and concluded at 2 pm with the participation of 20 companies, covering 34 job profiles. In the second slot of the day, one placement was held between 4 pm and 11 pm where 30 companies put forth over 42 job profiles. Some of these companies included Samsung Semiconductor, Jaguar, and Bajaj Auto.
With regards to the internship, the entire process was conducted online, wherein, 17 companies participated in the first day of the internship drive which offered over 140 internship opportunities.
IIT Madras kick-started its 2020-21 placement drive. The first phase of the campus placements was scheduled to commence on December 1, 2020. According to reports, the companies which have offered the highest number of pre-placement offers include Microsoft (12), Goldman Sachs (9), Qualcomm (10), American Express (9), and Texas Instruments (12).
By Day-6 of the Placement Drive, ICICI Bank made 27 offers, Larsen and Toubro made 22 offers, Microsoft made 19 offers, while Intel and Flipkart made 17 offers each at IIT Madras.
Approximately 22 companies offered a total of 123 job roles on the first day (December 1, 2020). The placements at IIT Madras commenced at 7 am and concluded at 2 pm. It witnessed the participation of 22 companies covering 43 job profiles. The institute conducted the second and final slot of the day between 4 pm and 11 pm. 24 companies with 48 profiles were scheduled to participate.
A total of 1,443 students have registered for placements across different streams of study. As many as 256 companies will be recruiting for 472 profiles. A total of 71 start-ups have registered for recruitment in the ongoing academic year 2020-21.

Towards the end of the IITM Final Placement session, the students witnessed an overwhelming surge of placement offers as more than 246 companies visited the campus. The highest CTC offered was 1.33 Cr. Per annum, whereas the average annual CTC was around INR. 16.1 LPA.
The department of Computer Science and Engineering bagged the highest salary package of INR 133.05 LPA followed by the Department of Electrical Engineering. The Department of Management Studies at IIT-M witnessed a 100% placement record where the highest CTC offered was of INR. 29.1 LPA. The highest number of students were recruited by the IT sector followed by the Analytics/Consulting/Finance sector.
The institute offers seven different degree programs along with an MBA program offered by the Department of Management Studies. The MBA Batch of 2020 at DoMS consisted of 65 students from across India. 63 students participated in the placement drive while 2 opted out. The batch had students coming from diverse backgrounds like engineering, commerce, hotel management, arts, and pharmaceutical science. The average work experience of the batch is 19.5 months in diverse sectors like Banking, IT, Finance, Education, FMCG, etc.

The B.Tech. the program under the department of CSE bagged the highest CTC of INR. 113 LPA followed by the Dual Degree program with the maximum CTC of INR. 92.94 LPA.
The flagship MBA program at DoMS constituted the major proportion of the placement drive. The average CTC stood at 12.44 lakhs per annum (INR) for the MBA 2017-19 batch. The M.S. (by Research) and Ph.D programs also witnessed an impressive placement season with an average CTC of INR 12.79 lakh per annum for the M.S. (by Research) program.

In comparison to all courses offered at DoMS IITM, MBA bagged the highest salary offer, while MS by Research bagged the lowest salary package of 15.96 LPA.
A total of 61 companies from the Analytics/Consulting/Finance sector visited the campus and recruited more than 204 students. The highest number of students (234) were hired by the IT sector. 27% of the total placements were made by the IT sector followed by the Analytics/Consulting/Finance sector with 23% placements. 19% of the placements were done under the Core sector, No recruits were hired by the R&D sector.
For the Management programs at DoMS IITM, the following statistics were observed:
Different industries recruited candidates as per their work experience, The Analytics sector came up with 33% of the total placement offers. The highest CTC offered by it was of INR. 15 LPA. The key recruiters were- Accenture, Ford, and Wipro.

The Consulting sector came up with 26% of the total placement offers. The highest CTC offered by it was of INR. 16.8 LPA. The key recruiters were- CISCO, IBM, Micron Tech.
The Marketing and the Operations Sector recruited over 8% and 6% of the batch respectively and offered the highest CTC of INR. 29.1 LPA each. The key recruiters were- AG Facilities, VIP, Zycus, Amazon, and McKinsey.
17% of the students were placed in the Finance sector, 2% in the HR Sector, and 8% in the IT industries, where the highest CTC revolved around 14.0 LPA, 8.0 LPA, and 12 LPA respectively.

Microsoft put forth a total of 22 job offers whereas Intel brought out 26 job offers. 13 and 16 placement offers were provided by American Express and Flipkart respectively.

National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), under the guidance of the MHRD, follows a fixed methodology to rank higher education institutions across India. The parameters considered for rankings purposes range from quality of teaching, research practices, graduation outcome, diversity in the student body, and overall perception of students as well as employers.
IIT Madras has stayed put in the first position of the NIRF Engineering Ranking since 2016. Its latest composite score, considering all the ranking parameters is 89.05.

Evident from the table above, IIT Delhi has been the major gainer over the past three years while IIT Bombay has lost several points. The graph of IIT Kharagpur, Kanpur, and Roorkee has fluctuated considerably since 2017, though 2019 saw all the three institutions gain a couple of points in terms of composite score.
Outlook-ICARE India Top University Rankings 2019 edition places IIT Madras in the Third position considering the key parameters Faculty Student Ratio, Faculty Qualification, Published Papers, Citations Per Paper, and Inclusiveness & Diversity.
In Outlook’s annual ranking, 201 institutions were evaluated on five key parameters: Institute Profile & Selection Process, Academics, Personality Development & Exposure, Infrastructure & Facilities, and Placements & Graduating Outcome.
IIT Madras topped the list while IITs Delhi, Bombay, Kharagpur and Kanpur trailed behind. The only private institution featuring in the top-10 of Outlook’s 2019 Engineering Ranking is BITS Pilani.
