The university was established in 2007 by the Parliament of India through the Central Universities Act (2009), Central University of Gujarat. The university is recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC). The Central University of Gujarat is commonly known as CUG and accredited by NAAC with a grade of ‘B++’. The university houses 11 schools namely the School of Chemical Sciences (SCS), School of Applied Material Sciences (SAMS), School of Education, School of Environment and Sustainable Development (SESD), School of International Studies (SIS), School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies (SLL&CS), School of Library and Information Sciences (SLS), School of Life Sciences (SLS), School of Nano Sciences (SNS), School of National Security Studies (SNSS) and School of Social Sciences (SSS).

As per the official website of the Central University of Gujarat, the motto of the university is to provide a global platform for knowledge and employability to CUG students along with society and industry interface. The university was ranked overall 60th in India and 2nd among all the universities in Gujarat in NIRF 2016 Rankings. According to NIRF 2017 Rankings, the university ranked among the top 150 universities in the country. The university has two independent centres. There are nineteen centres within these 11 schools covering multidisciplinary subjects. The Central University of Gujarat is functioning from temporary premises at present in sectors 29 and 30 of Gandhinagar, the university has been allocated 100 acres of land near Vadodara by the Government of Gujarat.

Central University of Gujarat, Gandhinagar Facilities

Boys Hostel
Central University of Gujarat offers limited hostel accommodation for men. Students must note that admission to hostels is offered on a first come first allotment basis. Fees are according to the university rules and regulations. Also, students can opt for private accommodation on a shared basis available in Gandhinagar at reasonable rates.
Girls Hostel
Girls students can avail the hostel facility provided by the Central University of Gujarat. Admission to hostels is offered based on a first come first allotment basis.
Auditorium
The Central University of Gujarat has a well-equipped auditorium with required facilities. The auditorium is used to conduct workshops, seminars etc. It has a seating capacity ranging from 45 to 200 people.
Transport Facility
Central University of Gujarat has AC buses that are available on the demand of students and faculty. The university offers transport facilities for students and faculty. The bus also plies between hostels and campuses at designated times.
Cafeteria
The Central University of Gujarat has a cafeteria on both campuses. Canteen facilities are provided to students to ensure their food requirements are fulfilled.
Sports
The Central University of Gujarat believes in the overall development of students. The university is well aware of the importance of physical activities for which it organises annual sports events. A multi-gym facility is available on the campus for students. The university offers basic sports facilities and is tied up with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for sports facilities.
Medical/Hospital
Students at the Central University of Gujarat can avail of the government medical facility available adjacent to the university campus. A medical consultant also visits the university to extend the services to the students at subsidised rates. In addition to this, students are covered under the insurance policy of the university.
Wi-Fi
The University is Wi-Fi enabled and students can access the internet on the basis of apersonal id and password provided by the University. The University also has a Virtual Learning Resource Centre and a Multimedia Lab that enables students to access a large variety of resources on the web that includes journals, databases, and books. The University also has the facility of Language Lab for German Studies and Chinese Studies.
Laboratories
Central University of Gujarat has 10 science laboratories that help students to undergo practical learning. The university also has a Virtual Learning Resource Centre and a Multimedia Lab that ensure students are getting e-resources including databases, journals etc. Language Lab facilities are also available for German Studies and Chinese Studies.
Library
Central University of Gujarat library has a huge collection of information materials taking into consideration the course content and information requirements of students of the university. The collection of the library is reviewed every year to cater to the research needs of the faculty. The library collection includes books, reference books, journals, magazines, journals etc. The library has SOUL software and computerised facilities. Workstation and internet are provided to students coming from economically backward areas who can not afford to buy computers individually.
I. T Infrastructure
All schools and centres of the Central University of Gujarat are connected through a private network that is highly secured. The devices are connected through a 1 GBPS broadband connection. Both the campuses of CUG have wifi facilities that provide computing facilities. Students in various programmes are provided computers so that they can access the internet anytime.
