St. Joseph’s College is an autonomous institution situated in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India. It was affiliated to Madras University till 1869 but is now affiliated to Bharathidasan University. It is also the only college in Tamil Nadu to be awarded with “Heritage Status” by UGC. St. Joseph’s college is also the first autonomous arts and science college in the country to secure the prestigious A++ rank for the fourth cycle of accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

The college boasts a wide range of courses to choose, from undergraduate to postgraduate, M.Phil, Ph.D and vocational courses. The college offers BA, B.SC, B.Com, B.Voc, BBA courses under the Undergraduate category and MA, M.SC, M.Com courses under the postgraduate category. It also has a one of a kind MBA Twinning Programme with specialization in marketing. The College offers MBA program in Finance, Marketing, Human Resource Management, and Systems. To be eligible to apply for admission, candidates should have a graduation degree in any discipline with at least 50% aggregate marks.

Candidates applying should have passed any of the CAT/ MAT/ XAT/ TANCET entrance exams. Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their score in the entrance exam for further selection process. Final selection will be based on a Written Test (test consists of Aptitude, Written English, and Contemporary Awareness), Group Discussion and Personal Interview.

St. Joseph’s College offers Ph.D. and M.Phil courses as research-based courses in various disciplines. Ph.D. and M.Phil courses are offered in both full-time and part-time mode. Candidates applying must have done Post graduation in the concerned discipline to be eligible.

For admission a common eligibility written test comprising objective type questions for 75 marks and oral interview for 25 marks. Candidates are selected based on their academic performance, research interest, entrance test, and interview.

Boys Hostel

Bellarmine Hostel is meant for students of the Self Financing Courses and M.Phil. scholars. There are 65 rooms (Single and double beds) that can accommodate 150 students. The boarding facility for the students is provided at the Sacred Heart Hostel. A Reading room, a Television cum Music room, a volleyball court are the other facilities provided in the hostel. Meals are taken at Sacred Heart Hostel. At the time of admission, a student has to pay Rs.1300/- to the Director of the Sacred Heart Hostel. Of this amount, Rs.900/- will be refunded at the end of the year. Newspapers and Magazines are available in the Reading Room. NEW HOSTEL has 4 Blocks with 310 rooms (single, double and triple beds) and can accommodate 830 students. The hostel provides 2 messes and there are 2 dining halls with modern kitchen facilities. Visitors’ Room, Reading Room, Music Room, Television Room, Prayer Hall, Meeting Hall, Play Ground (1 Basket Ball Court, 2 Volley Ball Courts, 3 Tennikoit courts) and public address system are the other facilities provided in this hostel.Sacred Heart Hostel has 2 Blocks with 132 rooms (single and multiple beds) and 2 big halls which can accommodate a total of 518 students. The Hostel provides 2 Messes and there are 2 Dining halls with a modern kitchen. Visitors’ Room, Reading cum Library Room, Music Room, Television Room, Indoor Games Room, Prayer cum Meeting Hall, and a Public Address System are the other facilities of the hostel. Clive’s Hostel can accommodate 210 students from various regions of the state this year.

St. Theresa Girls’ Hostel currently the 86 inmates come from different places.

The college has a Gym facility for the students.

The College Library now has collection to over 1,60,000 and over 140 periodicals. Web OPAC-online search facility was launched on 7th Aug, 2006. Access to e-Journals is available through UGC-Infonet Programme of Bharathidasan University and N-List from INFLIBNET through the New Digital Library from 2007. New mega Arrupe Library was inaugurated on 12th December 2008. XEROX Xerox facility is available in the library. Computers are available in the library for OPAC services, library catalogues, journals etc. There are about 124 History and Geography Maps.

Ample facilities are provided to play all the major games. Under the able guidance of specialised coaches for all the games the players are given exposure to tournaments at various levels: State Level and South India Level Competitions. Being a leading college in sports, the Tamil Nadu Government selected St Joseph’s College as one of the Joint Sports Development Centres with Financial Support for Athletics, Volleyball and Football. The Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu is giving scholarships to 38 students in Football, Volleyball and Athletics every year. The joint Sports Development Centre offers special consideration due to the excellence of the sportsmen in the sports field.

Alumni Associations

The college has a good networking for alumni association. The Alumni Association of St Joseph’s College was started in 1983. Rev Fr S M Felix SJ was the first Director. Along with him, a band of committed and generous Executive Committee members invested their time and energy for the welfare and growth of the Association. Seven Jesuits have served as the Directors of the Association and have taken the Association to newer heights with the support of the former Presidents and the members of the Executive Committee.

The college offers various scholarships to help students on the basis of their merit. Following is a brief about

Jesuit Educational Support (JES): It is a management scholarship for school, college and hostellers. Students can avail this scholarship for their studies. Every year, 60 lakh students are benefitted.
Backward Classes Welfare: To be eligible for this, the annual income of parents must be INR 1-2 LPA. The scholarship amount will be credited to the student’s bank account. The student must submit his/her bank details with IFSC codes.
Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare: To be eligible for this scholarship, the annual income of parents must be from INR 1-2 LPA.
