The institute came into existence with a generous grant of 30,000 pounds from an American philanthropist, Mr. Henry Phipps. At that time IARI Delhi was known as Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) and it was functioning in Bihar. Later on in the year 1911 the name was changed to Imperial Institute of Agricultural Research and then again it was renamed as Imperial Agricultural Research Institute in the year 1919. The institute was relocated to Delhi in the year 1936 and post-independence it was renamed to  Indian Agricultural Research Institute. IARI Delhi got the status of a Deemed University in the year 1958.

The institute has been accredited by the NAAC and has been recognised by the University Grants Commission. With a total student enrollment of 289, the institute has a faculty strength of 28 members. The campus size of IARI Delhi is 1250 acres and it has several facilities such as hostel, sports, labs etc. for the students. The Indian Institute of Management Bodh Gaya was established in 2015. It is situated in the historically important city of Bodh Gaya known as the birthplace of Buddhism and the place where Buddha got enlightened.
