It is a NAAC “A” accredited college which provides  Undergraduate and Postgraduate in various disciplines along with PhD in Home Science. Initially started by a registered Co-operative society way back in Established In : 1961, the college completed it’s 50 years of existence recently in the year Established In : 2011. During its yesteryears, the college only provided a 2-year Diploma Course in Home Science which was further followed by a 1-year Teacher Training Course in Home Science. During it’s developing years, the college changed hands from the Co-operative society to a Trust “Home Economics Education Society” with Mrs Rameshwari Nehru as the President and Dr(Mrs) S. Malhan as the founder Director of the college. IHE, New Delhi became a constituent college of the University of Delhi in the year Established In : 1969 and within a few years two more new programmes were introduced, i.e 1-year Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics & Type:Public Health & Nutrition and 3-year B.Sc (Hons) in  Home Science. In the year 1987, Lt. Giani Zail Singh, the then President of India laid the foundation stone of what was to become the present day college campus in Hauz Khas Enclave, in addition to the existing campus DLF provided the Co-operative society on a 99-year lease. The same year also marked the introduction of IHE’s first Postgraduate programme- 2-year M.Sc Home Science in Textile and Clothing. Later, another 2-year M.Sc Home Science in Food and Nutrition was introduced in Established In : 1993. In a few years, it introduced a Four Year Integrated Degree Course in Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) in Established In : 2004. The college today imparts professional education to more than 1500 girls from different social strata in various Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctorate level. It also has some Doctoral Research Programmes in addition to some Short term courses.IHE shifted to its new campus in the year Established In : 2001 and with better facilities to aid its motto-” KARTAVYA SARVA SADHAKAM” the college has since achieved greater heights in the field of academic excellence. Late Dr APJ ABDUL KALAM, former President of India, addressed the students of IHE, New Delhi during it’s Golden Jubilee Celebration in Established In : 2011 which is a major event in the history of the college.
